Studio

In over 40 years Ivan has had studios of all types: chicken houses, attics, tool sheds, grand sky-lighted barns. His current Santa Fe studio is humbly attached to his home and he adores the intimate moments he has there. “In the end, it’s really not the space that matters as much as the feeling the artist has when alone with his tools, materials, thoughts, and the suspended time where beginnings and endings become the same. It can be the loneliest place in the world or the fullest, sometimes at the same time.”

Ivan discovered oxidized steel as a raw material in the late 1970s. “I just love it. It’s easy to fabricate and cut by hand. If I choose to apply pigment to the surface, it’s marvelous, like a primed canvas with a natural ground.”
